Ice Obsidian is an igneous mineral, Mohs hardness 5.5.
Where it’s found: Ice obsidian is a more translucent natural obsidian, from the same volcanic-glass family as black and silver sheen obsidian. Obsidian forms where lava cooled very quickly, for example in Mexico and the western United States.
Why the colour: Black obsidian gets its colour from countless tiny mineral particles. Ice obsidian has far fewer, so light passes through and it looks smoky and clear.
