Citrine Round is an igneous mineral, Mohs hardness 7.
Where it’s found: Most of the citrine on the market comes from Brazil, and some also comes from Madagascar.
Why the colour: Citrine is the same quartz as amethyst, with tiny traces of iron. Naturally yellow citrine formed when the stone was heated deep underground, or when the iron was already in its yellow-making state. It's rarer, and usually a paler yellow.
Good to know: Much of the citrine on the market is made another way: amethyst that has been gently heated, which turns it yellow. This is a long-accepted, stable treatment that only changes the colour.
