Violet Purple
Amethyst Nugget
Elongated, polished amethyst nuggets with broad irregular facets and natural violet-to-clear zoning.
Amethyst Nugget is an igneous mineral, Mohs hardness 7.
Where it’s found: Most of the world's amethyst comes from Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia.
Why the colour: Amethyst is quartz with tiny traces of iron in it. Over a very long time underground, natural radiation turns that iron into a special state, called a colour centre, which absorbs yellow-green light, so we see purple.
If amethyst is heated to roughly 400–500°C, the colour centre breaks down and the iron shifts into an iron-oxide state that absorbs blue-violet light instead, so the stone turns yellow, golden or orange. It's a physical change in the crystal's structure: no chemicals are added, and the new colour is stable.
Good to know: Amethyst is usually untreated. Its colour can slowly fade if it sits in strong sunlight for long periods.
Across traditions, amethyst nugget is worn as a reminder of calm, intuition, clarity and balance. We share these correspondences as cultural tradition, not medical claim.
